When Felina Danalis moved permanently to the Coachella Valley to care for her ailing mother, she also had another big life change in mind. With great passion for a new business concept, she wanted to explore how best to really develop her idea and launch her dream.
Every day a Coachella Valley business opens and every day another closes.
Armed with degrees from prestigious colleges and experience working for large corporations around the world, Felina wondered what her odds were of becoming successful as she converted her dream to reality.
Why are some small businesses thriving and others not?
Successful people frequently pay homage to their personal mentors: Mark Zuckerberg openly admits that part of his push to move forward with his “great Facebook idea” came with advice and counsel from his mentor Steve Jobs. Bill Gates was mentored by Warren Buffet and Richard Branson reached out to British airline entrepreneur, Sir Freddie Laker. These successful people recognized the wealth of knowledge that comes from a generous mentor and pay it forward in their lives today.
Could it be that all new or struggling business owners really need to be successful is a personal mentor – someone that can offer strategic support, experienced guidance and market perspective? Felina knew there was a market for her life-coaching business concept and realized turning to others for help would be crucial to her success as she opened Spiritual Fitness Coaching.
Mentors paying it forward
She had heard about SCORE Coachella Valley, and from research learned they focus on pairing clients with mentors who have valued experience in the field of concern for each client. She was thrilled there was a free, confidential mentor program close to home and took a chance by making an appointment. She quickly found a volunteer mentor that understood and was excited about her vision, with the skills to guide and encourage her business growth.
Together they developed a marketing plan to find the right clients for her specialized personal coaching business and it is a great partnership. “I found a supportive and realistic environment and someone who believed in what I wanted to do,” she notes, “And because of the support I realized it was OK to not know everything, but that my experienced mentor was there to help me address my unique business challenges and opportunities.”
In the three years since Felina’s first visit to SCORE her personal life coaching business now reaches clients here in the Valley and all around the world. By partnering with a volunteer business expert who had many years of experience, Felina benefitted from his knowledge and encouragement. She also knows and is grateful that SCORE mentoring never ends.
